I am away from Charleston for the next 11 days and will be shooting in Boston and Maine. During this time, I will be away from e-mail and phone for much of the time. I will probably have a total tech blackout (TTB) when I get to Maine because where I am going is right next to BF Egypt. I am looking forward to creating some beautiful images and also to the TTB (it just so rarely happens anymore). I will return e-mail and phone calls as soon as I return so please be patient.

Though I am a fine art photographer in Charleston, South Carolina, I still love to travel. In fact, even though Charleston is beauitiful and I absolutely love living here, I find that I NEED to travel to keep my creative juices flowing. So far this year, I have spent time and photographed in Phoenix, Miami, San Diego and Boston and Maine starting next week. When I travel, I am able to focus on just seeing and shooting rather than running a business which is so time consuming when at home. Anyway, I have been enjoying scanning some old slides I created a number of years ago when photographing Grand Teton National Park. I created this image early on the first morning I was there. It was my first opportunity to see the Tetons in that magic light. I love the near/far compositions to give you a sense of how it would feel if you were standing right there. The mountain on the upper left is Mount Moran which was names for Thomas Moran - the famous landscape artist who’s work was fundamental in educating congress and Washington about the beauty of the west which impressed upon them the need to protect areas for future generations. Because of his work we have Yellowstone National Park - the first national park. The glacier on Mount Moran is called Skillet Glacier because during the summer, it looks like - you guessed it - a skillet. It is one of 5 glaciers on the mountain. Ok here is the last fact which is kind of sick but interesting - in 1950, there was a passenger airpalane that crashed into Mount Moran killing all 21 people on board. The airplane and the remains of it’s passengers are still on the mountain. How crazy is that!

More to photographs from Charleston and South Carolina will be next so check back.

Here is a new images from the upper Wando River - actually one of the creeks off of the Wando that runs by Dunes West in Mount Pleasant, SC. It is one of the images I created during a wedding photo shoot out there with some stunning afternoon light. I absolutely love the subtle greens, oranges and blues. It is, like all the others in this series, a very simple composition allowing for a more abstract image that leaves just the photo impression. This image looks incredible on canvas with a gallery wrap in sizes up to 40×60 inches.

Enjoy, Scott

If you live in or are visiting the San Diego area, please consider attending and supporting Pro Peninsula’s annual benefit called Summer Lunada taking place this Saturday (July 25th). A Lunada is an evening get together with friends for music, laughter and good cheer. This year, the event is happening at a private residence on top of Mt. Soledad overlooking La Jolla and the Pacific Ocean so it should be beautiful. Pro Peninsula is an organization dedicated to the conservation of the unique natural environment of the Baja California Peninsula. Because I believe in the cause and also hope to support them, I have donated the piece titled “Looking South” which is a 20×40 inch gallery wrapped canvas which retails for $1200.00. It will be one of the many live auction items with which you can enrich your life. See it here:

The beautiful thing about digital photography is the ease with which one can share photographs. Back in the days of film photography, you had to make a print or set up for a slide show and take the time to show the images. There is a lot to be said for being in front of the person who is seeing your image for the first time because you can see the reaction is has in that person. You get to see what they think about the image and what it means to them.

I was looking for something the other day and came across some slide carousels from a presentation I gave to the Sierra Club and the Charleston Photography Club a number of years ago. I pull them out and have been working to scan some of the images so I can once again share the images. Since I will not be right in front of you when sharing these images, I would love it if you will post a comment to let me know what you think. I hope to post a series of these images over the coming weeks.

Here is one image from Grand Teton National Park which was created over the 4th of July holiday in 2001. This is Moulton Barn with Grand Teton in the background. The first day I was in the park, I passed right my this location without knowing it was there because I got up early (before sunrise) to shoot in the north area of the park. I spent the majority of that day asking people where Moulton barn was located without finding anyone who knew. It was not until I was heading back to camp that afternoon that I realized I had passed right by it early that morning. Spectacular place! I shot this image in both 35mm and 6×9.

This image is one of the images I created in Grand Teton National Park over the 4th of July weekend a few years back. I love the “S” shaped road leading the eye to the massive mountains. It is the same location and time as I shot the Tetons image that rolls across the header of my blog. Beautiful area!

I was away from Charleston for the past 10 days for a conference in San Diego and some photography in southern California. This is the 2nd time I have shot in the area in the past 8 months and feel like I am able to get around the city quite well now. It is an absolutely beautiful place but some parts of the year are much better for photography. This time of year, they call it June Gloom because the marine layer pushes onshore and blankets the city with a gray day that sometimes sits over the city and coast for days at a time. It has that look of clouds that are just about to rain but it never does. It is also quite cool during this time because of the blanket of clouds so I had the opportunity to comfortably wear long pants and shirts in June which is not an option in Charleston.

Despite “The Gloom” which did not burn off when I was shooting, I was able to make the photographs below.

Enjoy,

On the first day of my Spoleto exhibit in the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibit, the judge comes around to view all of the work and select what he feels is the best work. I am very proud and pleased to say that I won 3rd place overall. This is a very nice compliment to my work especially considering the strength of the work shown by other artists and the history of judges in this show to be biased against fine art photography in the major awards. So I am very happy and have been appreciative of all of the people who have come out to see my work and congratulate me on the award. If you have not had an opportunity to come out, please do and say hello. It is a wonderful time to see Charleston and take in all of the arts throughout the city during this time of year. We will be exhibiting through next Saturday (June 6th). The piece below was the image the judge asked me to bring to the awards ceremony to represent my work.

Please come see me and my new work out at the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Juried Art Exhibit in Marion Square. The exhibit of the artwork of some of the most respected 2D artists throughout South Carolina. Of course, since it is held in Charleston, there is a large contingent of Charleston artists. Out of the roughly 100 artists, there are approximately 95 painters/mixed media and 5 photographers. This will be my 9th year exhibiting here and it is always a good time to come out and see new work. I have enjoyed seeing locals as well as those who travel year after year to see my work and the other things going on for Spoleto. If you have never been to Charleston or have not been during Spoleto, it is one of the best times to come and take in Charleston. During this time, Charleston is alive with the arts. The exhibit runs from Friday May 22 - Saturday June 6th and is open from 10 - 5 daily.

Thanks,

Here is a view from the north end of Folly Beach looking towards the mouth of the port of Charleston. The lighthouse is the Morris Island lighthouse but as you can see, it is no longer residing on Morris Island. The currents at the mouth of the port have taken it’s toll and washed away the north tip of Morris Island. There is a non profit organization called Save the Light that has been instrumental in keeping this structure standing. Check out their website here. I love this image because of the color and the way it shows the lighthouse in relation to the surrounding land (or lack of it). I hope you enjoy it.
